Invasive Species

This is a Cuban Tree Frog. It looks very similar to those in Florida, however it is an invasive species and is harmful to humans.

The native species of tree frogs in Florida are now threatened by the introduced species of tree frogs from Cuba. The Cuban tree frog and the ones native to Florida eat the same food, this has caused competition.  Since the Cuban tree frog is much larger, it beats the Florida tree frog in the competition for food. This has caused a major decrease in the population of Florida tree forgs. The human impact is on this issue is that we were the ones who brought over the invasive species by boats; without humans the Cuban tree frog would have never been introduced to Florida and there would still be balance in the ecosystem. The native Species was already threatned, and now it must stive even harder to survive.

Opinion:
I feel that humans are most to blame for this problem. Without humans, they ecosystem would have never been thrown off balance. This problem could easily be prevented by checking to make sure there are no animals on the boat that could possible effect the other countries ecosystem.

Questions:

1. What can we do to help the Florida tree frog?

2. How can we prevent this problem from happening in other places?

3. Do you think invasive species is a serious problem? Explain.

  1. OPINION
The fact the the Florida tree frogs are dying out because humans were careless is an abomination. This invasive species is ruining that areas biodiversity. It is even more offputting that humans introduced this species to the ecosystem. If they had not, the florida tree frog may have had a better chance of surviving.

    Question #3
Yes, this is a problem to have invasive species . They ruin biodiversity and kill native species. This can be prevented if humans would stop disrupting biodiversity by bringing these species to the United States.g

  2. I agree with Allison, the humans are to blame; just like the majority of the other environmental issues with the extinctions of organisms. The boats shouldve gone through some sort of customs, though, when they came to America. And Mrs. Simon said this is a prime example of why they even have cumstoms to begin with.

    Question 2:
We can prevent this by being more careful with shipping and recieveing things. Like I said before, this is why we have customs. There's no point to customs if organisms like these can slip by and start causing huge environmental issues. And of all places, I would think Cuba would have even stricter rules and laws on shipping and recieving with them being Communist.

  3. I agree with Allison I beleive that it is mainly the humans fault for bringing the cuban tree frog over to America. Humans are destroying our ecosystems without notice and soon it will be human activity to blame for a mass extinction soon. But I'm surprised that the frogs maee there way onto the boat without anyone anyone noticing.I wonder if the florida frogs will have natural selection like we learned in class.

    Question-1
We can do many things to protect the florida tree frog. First we can make sure that no more cuban tree frogs have access to America. Second we can put some species in a reserve where no cuban frogs are and see if the florida frogs will head towards recovery. Third we can try to more the cuban frogs back to Cuba or try to get as many of them as possible to cut down the numbers.

  4. I believe the same thing Allison does. The humans are to blame because we are carless with what happens to the enviroment sometimes. We need to take more responsibility for our actions. Humans are causing many animals to become excint.

    Question 1
We could could set up a program to help protect them. We could also try and repopulate the frogs by breeding them in captivity. Humans could be more aware and not allow any Cuban tree frogs to enter the United states.

  5. Something I would like to add to my comment is that the cuban frog is like the asian crap going into the rivers and maybe lakes.
